In place of our regular meeting, we're going to have a panel discussion at Adobe Live on the 24th, starting at 18.30:

The future of the Internet as an Applications Platform Tools, technologies, skills and experiences that will define Web 2.0 This panel discussion will explore topics around the design, development and deployment of rich internet applications, provide an insight into real-world development experiences and discuss how AJAX, Flex and other technologies will be used to blur the lines between desktop and web-based applications.

• "The future of the Internet as an Applications Platform". The title seems to miss what the internet is becoming about...but maybe thats what you guys are wanting to discuss? What's interesting about the future, to me, is in the way certain technologies like RSS, API's etc and apps like Google Notebook are blurring the lines between webpages/webapps. Hence, I'm seeing that the internet is moving form like a web of connected webpages/webapps, into the web 2.0 era, *cough*, of interconnected data sources. Sure the apps provide the data, but in the essence data is becoming central and app independant. What do you think?

• Hey Daniel, I don't believe that the two are mutually exclusive. The Internet is definitely becoming a platform for applications *and* we are seeing the sharing of data in what has been described as "Web 2.0". To tell you the truth, there needs to be much more progress on the "Web 2.0" side of things. The current status quo isn't so much *sharing* of data in the sense of "take this, do what you like with it" but instead offering a very narrowly defined license for use of data in certain ways (mostly non-commercial.) In a way, I see it as a very advantageous way for data providers to get developers to build cool applications for them (and, if the data providers like what they see, they can choose to sponsor them.) In order for W2.0 to really take off, I would argue that we need to find ways of monetizing these relationships so that developers can build mashups that they can actually profit from while also sharing a part of that profit with the data providers. Micropayments, maybe? In any case, we're definitely living in interesting times :)
